Ideas for Your Family:
Curriculum for
Preschool, PreK, & Kindergarten
When homeschooling in preschool, pre-K, and kindergarten, the key focus should be on play-based learning, routine, and connection rather than formal academics. Supporting language development, early literacy, basic math concepts, motor skills, and social-emotional growth through hands-on activities and everyday experiences helps build confidence and a love of learning that will last.
Curriculum for
Middle School (7-8th Grade)
When homeschooling in middle school, the focus should shift toward strengthening academic skills, developing good study habits, and encouraging critical thinking and responsibility. Supporting deeper learning in core subjects, teaching time management and organization, and allowing students to explore interests while maintaining open communication helps build confidence, independence, and readiness for higher-level learning.
Educational
Supplies
When homeschooling, it’s worth investing in high-quality basics that will get frequent use and support hands-on learning. Key supplies include books (especially leveled readers and reference books like dictionaries), writing tools and paper, manipulatives for math (like counting cubes or fraction pieces), art and craft materials (markers, paints, scissors, glue), and educational games/puzzles that build critical thinking. Depending on your approach, you might also budget for curriculum kits, science supplies for experiments, storage/organization tools, and a reliable printer with ink and paper. Prioritize materials that make learning active, engaging, and reusable rather than one-time worksheets or gimmicks.
Curriculum for
Elementary (1st-6th Grades)
When homeschooling in elementary school, the focus should be on building strong foundations in reading, writing, and math while nurturing curiosity, independence, and critical thinking. Consistent routines, meaningful practice, and real-world learning help skills develop naturally, while attention to social-emotional growth and flexibility ensures children stay engaged, confident, and motivated to learn.
Curriculum for
High School (9-12th Grades)
When homeschooling in high school, the focus should be on preparing students for life after graduation by building strong academic skills, independence, and responsibility. Emphasis on critical thinking, time management, goal setting, and real-world experiences—along with guiding course choices, transcripts, and future plans—helps students develop confidence and readiness for college, careers, or other paths.
Organizational
Supplies
When homeschooling, good organizational supplies can make your days smoother and less stressful. It’s worth investing in a sturdy planner or calendar for lesson planning and tracking assignments, binders and folders for storing work by subject and grade, drawer or shelf organizers to keep materials sorted, clear storage bins for curriculum kits and manipulatives, label maker or labels, cubicles or desk trays for student work-in-progress, and a filing system for records, portfolios, and important documents. Also consider a whiteboard and wall calendar to visualize schedules and goals. These tools help keep you and your kids on track and make transitions between subjects easier.
